Environmental health is the area of public health that deals with all the different ways the world can impact physical and mental well-being.
SCHD has a team of dedicated and skilled Environmental Health Specialists who work behind the scenes to prevent illness and disease that may be caused by environmental threats. They work to reduce or eliminate harmful exposures.
Staff inspect, investigate, regulate, and see that harmful exposures can be reduced or eliminated.
SCHD staff are licensed food inspectors with the state of Connecticut. Our team conducts routine and follow-up inspections of restaurants, food stores, and food trucks. We conduct new food service establishment plan reviews, complaint and outbreak investigations. We permit and inspect temporary food events, festivals, and farmers markets. We provide education and assistance to regulated businesses and the public.

SCHD staff are trained and certified to conduct soil testing, approve septic system designs, and inspect septic installations. Septic systems that are properly designed, installed, and maintained provide a safe and efficient way of disposing domestic sewage. 40 percent of homes in Connecticut are served by an on-site subsurface sewage disposal system. All three towns served by the district have homes served by septic.

SCHD staff conduct plan reviews and inspections of body care and personal service businesses in the district. These businesses include ones that provide hair, nail, esthetician, tattoo, tanning, massage and other body services.
Effective July 1, 2024, SCHD 'Body Care and Personal Services' code will be effective! Check back soon for a copy of the code and more details!

SCHD staff assist the State of Connecticut Office of Early Childhood conducting routine facility inspections of all licensed childcare facilities in the district. We also assist providers with education and illness prevention within facilities.

SCHD staff test bathing water at public beaches from Memorial Day to Labor Day annually. Testing is done to ensure bacteria levels are within safe limits for swimming. The district has one public beach located in Middlefield. Swimming access can be closed based on safety.

SCHD staff are trained and certified as Lead Inspectors and Risk Assessors. The respond to childhood elevated blood lead level cases, conduct comprehensive lead inspections, and address complaints regarding improper lead paint contractor practices.

SCHD staff are trained to respond to complaints about anything that could be a public health concern. They manage complaints regarding food borne illness, poor housing conditions, hoarding, standing water mosquito concerns, filth, garbage, sewage back-ups, and contaminated water.

SCHD staff are trained to educate Connecticut homeowners on the dangers of Radon in the home. Radon is an odorless, colorless, naturally occurring gas which causes lung cancer.
